• The Athenian philosopher Socrates (470-399 B.C.) had an enormous and lasting influence on the development of philosophy in the West. Although he authored no text of his own, his methods and teachings were captured in writing by his students, especially by Plato. In the works of Plato, Socrates uses a unique form of enquiry based on dialogue in which various aspects of an issue or an abstract meaning are explored.
• In this monograph, Robert attempts to examine Socrates' approach using the NLP technique of the Meta-Model. Selecting the Platonic dialogue entitled "The Republic," Robert attempts to analyze Socrates' power of speech - his ability to identify the weak points in an opponent's arguments and assumptions and his ability to formulate questions which directly challenge those weaknesses and assumptions.
• By creating a map of Socrates' language patterns and assessing the degree to which Socrates' method challenges its own assumptions, Robert demonstrates how the Socratic approach can be improved by making it more linguistically explicit.
